Ask A Dev: Toy Soldiers: Cold War

All questions are in! Congratulations to the participants below, you will be getting a prize :) Next week, we will be answering any burning questions you have about our upcoming game Ascend: New Gods. So make sure to post your questions on our forums by September 12th!   Without further ado, here are your questions...answered!

Foldupjosh: Would you give us a little hint as to whether there are plans to make a new Toy Soldiers or anymore expansion packs?

First off, thanks for being a fan of our games! I’m assuming that your question means you actually want more Toy Soldiers from us. We are currently working on Toy Soldiers Cold War: Touch Edition, to be released on the Windows 8 platform. This is our most recently announced Toy Soldiers title. Not surprisingly, the Toy Soldiers franchise is very dear to us here at Signal Studios. The first game put us on the map and helped us become who we are today. So, while we haven’t announced anything else specific in regards to new games or expansion packs within the franchise, I will say that we would love to see Toy Soldiers Cold War on more platforms, and have a ton of great ideas for the future of Toy Soldiers. It isn’t always up to us as to whether or not we get to make all these ideas a reality, but if it were, we’d be making Toy Soldiers games as long as people wanted to play them.    Cheers,

-Jason Ilano, Vice President and Game Director

LightPipe: How many TS:CW designers do you have? Is that more or less than you had for the first TS game?

On Toy Soldiers: Cold War we had two dedicated designers. Darryl Taverner, who did a large portion of the expansion levels, as well as all the minigames, survival, and multiplayer maps. And Robin Vincent (me) who oversaw level creation, constructed and scripted the single player levels, and implemented all the wave units, player vehicles, turrets, bosses, and did general system design (like the barrage system, economy, scoring, etc). There were many design contributions which came from the rest of the team as well.   Toy Soldiers 1, by comparison, had one dedicated designer. However the design of the first game was much more of a team effort, with DR Albright (owner/artist) designing, building and scripting much of the single player experience, and the programmers creating the turrets, waves, and drivable vehicles.   I hope this answers your question!   Thank you for enjoying our games,

-Robin Vincent, Lead Game Designer

xi R3CkL3Z ix: In the event of your new game Ascend: New Gods coming out, will you still give Toy Soldiers community more content or community events?

While we are still working on getting out the first patch for Toy Soldiers on Steam (now with Steamworks integration) and Toy Soldiers: Cold War Touch Edition out for the Win8 launch, you never know what may pop up in the near future on the content front. It has been awesome to see the reaction from the last 'Game with Devs' we had on the one year birthday of TS:CW and we do have more fun things planned out for the community! Just keep your eyes and ears focused and sharp as we announce things on Facebook, Twitter and the Signal forums. Best,

-Logan DeMelt, Community Manager and QA Lead (@XShadowStormX)
