I kill bears with melee.

Granted if you don't interrupt them they can roll out a chain of hits that will rip you apart quickly.
When they start their combo of swipes on you they will just keep going until you die.

The animations of the bear being interrupted is probably the hardest to spot, sometimes they look identical to them about to swipe at you.
